PAIGE ROBERTS The heart has reasons that reason cannot know. Soft music drifted from the speakers of the cafe. Beetles was a nice place to come to relax, have a small get together, write, study, whatever. This is the place Paige came here when she wanted to get away. Away from the stress of school, away from the judgmental eyes, away from the cruel rumors, and away from the world. This was her own little oasis. She could always find comfort at Beetles, and she found that she could always write here. Hell, even the waiters knew her about as well as her closet friends back home did.
As she walked through the door, Emmett - one of the waiters -, grinned and waved to her. "Evenin' Paige. The usual?" he asked her as she sat at her normal table by the windows. "No thanks Emmett. I'm actually expecting a....friend, tonight. Thank though." She smiled, and put her chin in her hand, staring out the windows at passers-by. They all seemed so carefree. Like none of them had any problems. How did the just mask everything out? Was it really that simple?
Paige felt herself growing anxious. It had been almost an hour since she'd IMed Holly-Ann and asked her to meet her here. She wasn't sure how to feel about the girl anymore. Holly-Ann Harrington was dating Jackson Cole. Jackson was Paige's ex-boyfriend, and she was still absolutely in love with him. She couldn't help it, everything about him made her melt. Now, Holly-Ann had him, and she wasn't too happy about that, seeing as how Holly-Ann had been her first friend here at WUoA.
Paige and Holly-Ann had been friends right off the bat, they had so much in common. It seemed like the perfect friendship. Or so they thought. In Paige's mind, Holly-Ann wanted everything for herself, whether it was true or not. Jackson was the only thing she could have taken, and obviously, she did.
Everything was out of place. Everything. In just two minutes after picking up the phone one night, her whole world had been shot to hell. Well, not anymore. Paige was determined to do everything possible in her power to set things right. Anything and anyone who stood in her way was going to fall, just as she had. Seeing as how Holly-Ann now possessed the most precious jewel in Paige's heart.... She was first.

As Holly-Ann approached the little cafe, she could feel her heart beating frantically in her chest. Her palms were sweating despite the chill in the October air. For a moment, she wondered what was wrong with her. She couldn't remember being this nervous about anything since her very first piano recital, back when she was nine. No, Holly-Ann Harrington didn't get nervous. Even before her jury the previous year, when most of her fellow music majors had been stressed beyond belief, she had been perfectly calm and collected; she had been as prepared as she could be, and she knew it. Yet here she was, nearly shaking, and not from the cold.
Over and over she told herself that she had nothing to worry about. She was just meeting a friend, just for a simple conversation...right? Wrong. Nothing was ever simple in this situation. Paige was the first friend she had made when she arrived at WUoA two years before. They had lived right across the hall from each other, and for a while had been virtually inseparable. But they had drifted apart after that year ended; they didn't have any classes together because of their different majors, and lived in different dorms the next year.
Then, of course, there was the main issue which had ultimately divided Paige and Holly-Ann - Jackson Cole. He and Paige had started dating not long after they had all arrived on campus, and the relationship had lasted for the better part of two years. Holly-Ann knew him too, of course; being Paige's friend, it would have been impossible not to get to know him also. At the time, her only impression had been that he was a gentleman who was treating her friend right, and she had been happy for Paige. Then the girls had drifted apart; and while Holly-Ann had rarely seen Paige during sophomore year, she kept running into Jackson on campus from time to time.
Not long after Jackson and Paige had split, for reasons Holly-Ann had never learned, she had run into Jackson again and he had asked her out. By this time, it had been months since Holly had even spoken to Paige, so the unspoken rule about never dating a friend's ex hadn't even crossed her mind when she said yes. That had been only a few months ago; and while things between them were going well, she could still tell that he still had feelings for Paige. But she wasn't going to break up with him just so he could go back to her; if he wanted to choose Paige over her, he would have to be the one to leave, and so far he hadn't.
Finally, Holly-Ann pushed open the door and walked inside, her eyes scanning the room. She saw Paige sitting at a table by a window, and took a deep breath as she began to approach her. Paige was staring out the window, so Holly-Ann cleared her throat nervously to get her attention. "Hey, Paige," she said quietly, sliding into the seat across from her. "It's...been a while, hasn't it?"

PAIGE ROBERTS The heart has reasons that reason cannot know. Paige turned her head as Holly-Ann sat down. She gave her a genuine smile. "Hey Holls." she said, using the nickname she'd given her two years ago when they'd met. Looking her over, as if sizing her up, she grinned. Paige had become a bit of a vain person, thinking she looked quite better than some of the other girls here a school. Holly-Ann gave her a slightly sick feeling these days. Ever since she'd seen Jackson two days ago and he'd kissed her. The thought of any other girl besides herself being with him just made her feel uneasy.
She did her best to hide her discomfort. Of course, she'd asked Holly-Ann to come here so that they could talk about Jackson, but they really did need to catch up. Hmm, she wondered if Holly-Ann knew that she and Jackson had kissed, or if he hadn't told her. Either way, she really didn't want to be the one who told her. Only because she knew Jackson would hate her for it. She couldn't help but give a stifled giggle at the thought of Holly-Ann's reaction when she would find out.
"So....How are you? How have you been? I haven't seen you in ages." Paige said, giving her a warm smile. From her appearance, she could tell Holly-Ann was nervous. She was trembling, faintly, but all the same, and she looked uneasy. Are...Are you alright? You look rather pale." A true look of concern crossed over her face. Holly wasn't sick was she? That wouldn't be good. It was flu season, or close to it. "Here. I'll get us some coffee. It's freezing out there, you must be cold. What would like? I'll have Emmett get us something." she offered, trying to be as friendly as she could.
There were four menus to their left, and so she grabbed one and handed it to Holly-Ann. She knew what she wanted, Holly just had to pick something. Waiting patiently, she stared out the window. Maybe everything could go back to the way it had been before. But she highly doubted it. Holly had broken the top rule in the girl code. Never date your friend's ex. A sudden strike of fury seethed into her blood and she had to clench her fists under her thighs not to reach across the table to hit her repeatedly.
She had she refrain from looking at her, so that maybe it wasn't obvious of her anger and jealousy. Honestly though, how could Holly-Ann do this to her? She knew how much Paige loved Jackson. Didn't that count for anything?
