To the man behind the curtain
Allen walked into the Drama room and closed the door behind him, he didn’t lock it so Ella could walk in without him having to go to the door and unlock it, which would be such a pain in the butt. He’d begged the teacher to let him book the room to practise the scene they’d had to learn for homework. He was lucky enough to be partnered with Ella, remembered the talk with Charlie in the café when he mentioned that she was his best friend so he figured maybe by getting to know her he could get to know Charlie a little better. Allen knew he was developing a crush on the guy, it probably had something to do with the fact that he was the first gay guy that Allen had met who didn’t seem ashamed of who he was and it didn’t hurt that he was incredibly good looking. Allen was hoping that there was a chance that Ella could at least give him some advice on how to get Charlie to notice him; if luck were on his side then… well it’d be a miracle. When it came to dating luck was never on his side but he could dream couldn’t he?
He walked over to the table by the wall and grabbed a copy of the script that they had to learn for class, he’d stupidly left his in his dorm room and really didn’t want to have to go back to get it. Luckily there were usually spares in the room for just such an occasion. “OK let’s have us a little looksee” he said opening the script and reading the first lines, he hadn’t read his copy yet, he never read a script before the first rehearsal. It had become like a ritual for him, he seemed to perform better if his first reading of the script happened on the first day of rehersal. It was one of those crazy theatre superstitions he’d developed “Whoa this is harsh stuff, whoever wrote this must have huge cajones” he said reading all the language in the first few lines. It was a tough read but that was the point, to see if they could perform something so emotional. He read on and got to the part where his character had to scream abuse at Ella’s, stuff he didn’t know if he could even say “Whoa dramatic” he said sitting by the wall and reading on. It was going to take a lot out of him but he had been wanting to act across from Ella for a while anyway, having seen her in class and thinking she was a pretty good actress… plus again there was that crush on Charlie he was hoping she could help him with, if she managed to somehow get him in with Charlie he’d be tickled pink. He put the book down and thought dreamily about Charlie, that talk in the café stuck with him and now he was just visualising Charlie and wondering what his lips tasted like.
He shook his head “Stop thinking about the cute muso, focus on the acting” he said trying to force the thoughts of Charlie out of his mind, why did he have to be a slave to his emotions? He tried to read the script but every time he did his mind just forced him back to his thoughts about the talk he’d had with Charlie in the café, it wasn’t that long ago but he was still reeling abut how nice it had been to talk to another gay guy without having to hide it. He put the script down and rubbed his eyes to try and get the Charlie related thoughts out of his mind, he felt his cheeks reddening and sighed “God what I wouldn’t give for an invisibility cloak right about now” he muttered, wanting to vanish and slink away before Ella turned up and spotted his reddened cheeks. He knew he couldn’t though, he’d gone to a lot of effort to set this rehearsal up and if he didn’t show up that wouldn’t go over well with Ella, who he could guess would tell Charlie what a flake he had been.
He wished he wasn’t so concerned about what Charlie thought about him, but on the other hand he wasn’t able to think about anything else “Damn, why’d he have to be cute and available and gay, it’s the freaking trifecta” he said hitting his head against the wall, getting a little dizzy because of it “Ow, motherchuker” his mothers teaching about swearing just wouldn’t go away. He looked at the clock “Come on Ella where are you?” he said under his breath. He was already seriously thinking about ambushing her with a barrage of questions about Charlie, what flowers did he like, what’s his favourite movie, does he like kumquats, all these thoughts threw his mind in a matter of seconds. He walked around the drama room and tried to think about how to approach the subject “Ok maybe I should just say ‘Hi, I’m attracted to your best friend, got any tips on how to get him to like me’… and then she’ll call security and I’m a dead man” he said shaking his head “This is tougher than I thought” he said leaning against the wall, his back to the door as he tried to collect his bearings before Ella turned up.
