for lack of the words, we called this love
but now they've cynical slurs to define what it was
Oh the mess…the beautiful mess! Alice was in heaven every time she walked into the huge costume room. She could find anything to make her outfit have an extra umph. This was more of her closet than her own one back at her apartment. She never saw it wrong to take a few items from the huge costume room. So the costumes were reserved for actual performances. There were so many clothes and accessories that she was sure that they wouldn’t miss a few items. Plus, she returned anything she took, well most of the time. There were some dresses in her closet that did belong to the drama department but no one had ever caught her yet. Most of the time the place was abandoned since it was pretty far off from the rest of the buildings. If there was ever someone else in the room she would just lie and said she had been sent over by another drama student. Alice didn’t plan on getting caught any time soon anyway.
Her eyes peered at the dividers that told what was down each row. There was everything from 1920s to fantasy to medieval. Even though she was looking at what the signs read she knew where she was going. She knew exactly what she wanted too, it just all came down to finding it. Alice turned down the section that read ‘1960s and 1950s’ in bold typed words. When she came face-to-face with the aisle her smile scrunched up. The section was messier then last time she had checked. She stopped in her tracks for second and took a deep breath. Then she began to wander into the jungle of clothes, searching for the jacket she needed to complete her outfit. The more she wandered into the aisle the messier it got. Her eyes scanned the mess then finally she saw what she wanted. It was just a white and blue cardigan with some beading but it was sadly quite buried in a pile of clothes on a few shelves up. She could tell it was what she wanted at the moment.
Alice began to get up on her tiptoes and reach for the sweater. Her small fingers grabbed around it and yanked at it. It didn’t budge at all. She tried to gain some more balance and yanked harder. This time the cardigan came out but along with that the rest of the clothes came out with them. There must have been more than she thought because there were enough to knock her off her feet. Luckily the concrete floor was already covered in a layer of clothes so the fall was cushioned. Sadly she was covered in a pile of clothes. Alice began to squirm, trying to get out of the thrift store smelling clothes.
