* lachlan core ! Its close to midnight and something evils lurking in the dark Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
As a child, Lachlan had always loved Halloween. He never missed a year with trick-or-treating and often planned out his costume months in advance. He couldn’t help himself. Getting to wear a costume and act like a loon excited the boy. Could you really blame him though? Who didn’t like Halloween? Honestly. Lachlan couldn’t think of anyone who wouldn’t like such a holiday. It maybe didn’t compare to Christmas, but Lachlan seemed to think it was far better then Easter and thanks-giving. Maybe even the fourth of July. Although that was a close one. Fireworks were pretty cool.
Costume finding was a little more challenging now, because there was the added layer of having to find something that involved a mask. It was a welcomed challenge though. His first year at Washington, he’d been very withdrawn in his costume and had just been a robber, wearing dark clothes and a balaclava. The next year, however, he’d been hugely ambitious and gone for bat-man. Well, not hugely ambitious, since as a dancer he was used to tight fitting clothes, but more so because there may have been ridicule. You know, the old ‘oh he’s a dancer, he’s wearing spandex.. oh he must be gay.’ Really, it just wasn’t funny anymore.
This year, he’d cheated a little. For his mask was merely just an eye-patch. Unless you counted the fake beared. Which he was sure probably didn’t count. It wasn’t as though he was going to be kicked out of the party for having insufficient costuming though. No one was that petty. Besides, he thought he looked rather good. He hadn’t really styled his costume after any particular pirate, he’d just pieced together pants, boots and a white shirt from the costume store-house. Oh, and a sword he had tucked into his belt. He had thought about a wig, but in the end decided against it, thinking the bandana he had tied over his hair was enough.
The first few buttons of the shirt were undone, showing off the young-mans chest. And the shirt was sloppily half tucked into his pants. He had even blacked out one of his teeth. Giving him the appearance of a very slovenly pirate indeed. Grinning slightly, the young man handed over his small donation, and moved further into the ‘haunted mansion’. He was always really impressed with the job the girls did on the ware-house and this year was no different. It looked truly spectacular filled with everyone in their assorted costumes.

Maybe it was the fact that Virginia was an actress that made her adore Halloween. It was one of the few times that she could wear a costume that was actually flattering! She did love it for more than the costumes though. The mystery, the intrigue...the candy. Virginia wasn't going to lie, she loved candy. She had already been chowing down on the stash that her father had sent her in the mail for most of the day. Man, she loved being in college and getting care packages, especially if it was from her dad because he knew which candies were her favorites. Even as she had been curling her hair for the mascaraed, she had been sucking on a jolly rancher sucker, careful not to get it on her costume, of course. She felt pretty proud of her costume this year. Since this was college, she couldn't go in her normal, crazy outfits like she normally did. Like last year, when she went as Facebook and wore a big sandwich board that people could write on as her "wall". No, this had to be different. It had to be sexy, it had to be something that she could dance in and it had to be something that she could put together in just a few days. She had decided on Peter Pan. She already owned this lovely green dress so all she had to do was go out and get a hat and some boots. It was an easy costume to put together and as Virginia got it all on and looked in the mirror, she noticed that it came out better than she had expected. It was a modern take on a classic costume, plus it wasn't as slutty as most of the other ones that she had seen girls wearing.
After getting all ready, she had met her friends up at the clock tower and continued to walk over to the building where the masquerade was being held. It was the first Halloween that Virginia wouldn't be trick-or-treating. It was wonderful, it was a symbolic right of passage to her. Her friends and her walked, laughing and talking about three notches above normal volume, all being hyper from the candy they had eaten throughout the day. And they were theatre people, they just couldn't help it. Virginia was somewhat quiet for herself though. She had high hopes for this night. She had been doing her usual thing of imagining how the night was going to go and what was going to happen. She was going to meet a mysterious man and they would fall in love on the spot. Okay, so Virginia knew it probably wouldn't turn out exactly like that...but one can hope right? Virginia didn't stop dreaming even after they were inside the warehouse. Her dreams had just become more vivid. She could now see what the scenery was going to look like, what the lighting did for her face. She told herself to stop it, just enjoy the moment, but she couldn't help but look at herself from the outside. It was an old habit that she would probably never break.
After a couple minutes of admiring the decorations, her friends turned around to her and shouted that they were going to go and try to find some people. Virginia heard that she should try to find a table or something to put their stuff and she just nodded. Not that she really cared that her friends ditched her. It would make for a better set-up. She sighed and looked around for a familiar face, hoping that she could start up a conversation with someone. She knew that she looked stupid just standing on the floor with nothing to do. She could go and dance...but by herself? That was just out of the question. Then it hit her...a drink. That was something that would keep her busy for a few minutes. It would also loosen her up a little, make her stop thinking about how she looked and such. She headed over to the side of the room that could loosely be referred to as a bar, mostly a table with people behind it handing out different kinds of drinks. Wow, even made to order drinks. She didn't know college parties were this classy.
After getting her drink, a nice mix of rum and coke, she made her way back to the front of the room. Her eyes were scanning to see who looked like they could use a friend. Or maybe a dance partner. One qualification, had to be good looking. It wasn't that she was shallow or anything but let's face it, who looks for unattractive people. Her eyes stopped. She had found one. A Mr. Pirate Man that although wasn't the hottest thing she had ever seen, he was definitely cute and apparently alone. Now she had to think of a way to introduce herself or something and not be creepy. She still hadn't really refined that aspect of meeting people. She made her way so that they were just hanging around in the same area. Good thing that her friend had dressed up like a pirate too, this would be too perfect. She tapped him on the shoulder and immediately started speaking. "Hey, do you know where Alice went because--" When his face was visible, she stopped speaking and made herself blush. She loved being an actress. "Oh...I'm sorry..I though you were...My friend is a pirate too."

Lachlan had come to the event alone. He didn’t intend to spend the whole night alone, but he hadn’t turned up with a large group of friends. Not that it bothered him too much. Sure, he liked his friends but he wasn’t exactly co-dependant. He didn’t need to be surrounded by his friends twenty-four hours a day. He would have turned up with his girlfriend, but apparently she and the girls in her dorm room were getting ready and heading over together. Which was nice wasn’t it? That Delilah was making friends? He wanted her to make friends besides him and those he had introduced her to. She needed her own life too right.
He hadn’t seen any of his other friends yet. Which was something of a shame. For one, he wanted to show odd his amazing costume. He really thought he’d outdone himself with it this year. Which meant he was going to have to think bigger and better for next year. His final year. Something that would really go off with a bang. That people would remember him by. Good thing he had all year to think and plan. Alright, so he wasn’t going to start planning his costume now. That would be rather silly. Though think about how awesome his costume could be if he truly spent such a long time on it?
The boy was so caught up in his visions of costume grandeur he hadn’t noticed the girl that was approaching him. Then again, she was coming from an odd angle. A blind spot if you will. So maybe he wouldn’t have seen her anyway. Regardless of why he hadn’t seen her, the fact of the matter was that he hadn’t seen her. So when he was tapped on the shoulder, it gave the young man a bit of a start. He whipped around quickly to see who was trying to gain his attention. The words she was saying as she tapped not making much sense to Lachlan at all. Last he checked, he didn’t know any Alice.
The blonde young man smiled down at the blushing face of the female who had mistaken him for one of his friends. So that explained the fact he was asking her about a girl named Alice. Poor thing. It was so embarrassing to mistake someone for a friend. He’d never done it himself, but he was sure he’d feel rather embarrassed. Chuckling slightly, he shook his head. He didn’t want to make the girl feel worse about what was happening. “No no. It’s perfectly fine. I mean, what with all the costumes I’m sure this wont be the first case of mistaken identity.”
He gave the girl a quick once over. Right, so he was taken. However he had eyes. He could appreciate a girl without it being a big thing. He wasn’t the sort of guy to stray. That was a sure thing. He knew Delilah knew that. So he felt no shame in his actions. “Nice costume.” He commented. Winking at the girl. Alright, so maybe that was giving out the wrong signals. He just wanted her to feel more comfortable. He didn’t want to have the poor thing spend the next few hours feeling completely awkward.

Virginia cheered inside her head. This had worked perfectly. Was it too cliche? Maybe so. It was probably all of the romantic comedies that Virginia had watched throughout her life that made her act this way. Oh well, if she didn't act like this she wouldn't be Virginia! She gave another embarrassed smile up at the guy. Okay, that was the last lie she would ever make. Of course, she had always told herself that but again and again she caught herself bending stories to make meetings and conversations more exciting and more acceptable. After she graduated from high school, she assured herself that she would be different in college. More...honest. Old habits were old to break. At least she never lied about anything too important. It was always just little things that never really mattered. This lie right now would probably never cause anyone to get hurt, would it? Plus, she couldn't help it. He was so attractive. In the cute, boy next door kind of way. So he wasn't Mr. Sex God or anything. He was attractive none the less.
"Nice costume." Virginia blushed a little and looked down at her brown boots. This time it was genuine. Compliments always caught her off guard, it didn't matter who was giving them. She smoothed out her dress a little bit then fiddled with her hat. "Thanks." She smiled, looking up into the man's eyes. Wow, his eyes. She hadn't noticed those before. Very nice. "I always thought Peter Pan should have been a girl anyway." She said off hand. So maybe it wasn't super clever or witty. Virginia never had quite the right things to say. Oh well, at least it was something to keep the beginnings of a conversation going. She took a sip from the drink in her hand. This is what she had imagined college to be like. Cool parties, alcohol at all of them. It wasn't like Virginia couldn't have a good time unless booze were there. It just made the party that much better. Plus, it always loosened her up a little bit so that she wasn't too shy. Not that she was really shy sober though.
"A Pirate. Very classy." She added, nodding her head and smiling. She loved Halloween because if there was nothing else to talk about, there was always costumes as a way to start off the conversation. "Nice teeth too." She said, letting a laugh out. The blackened out teeth were kind of freaking her out a little, she wasn't going to lie, but it was nice to see someone dedicated to their costume. She had never had the guts to make a costume that was accurate, instead of flattering. She admired those people that could. Virginia looked around him, trying to see if she could spot any 'group' that he might have come with. She couldn't find one. "Where are your crew members? Or are you sailing solo tonight?" Maybe it was stupid. Virginia didn't really care. Maybe this was just going to be some guy she would just talk with, dance with, maybe an innocent kiss and then never see him again. It would be weird if they actually became friends or something after this since she wasn't really acting like her whole self. It was just fun trying to act like a different person some times.

Lachlan always went all out with his costumes. In fact he was even known to speak and act in character. Flattering himself never really meant too much to him. It was much more fun to completely distort himself into something else entirely. As Halloween was the only socially acceptable time to do that, the young man took full advantage. He’d never been a fan of those girls who skanked it up, without putting in any effort in a costume. A skimpy dress and cat ears did not make you the Cheshire cat. While Virginia’s costume was flattering, Lachlan appreciated the effort she had put into it. What with he hat and boots.
At her comment about his teeth, Lachlan chuckled a little. The teeth had been a stroke of genius really. He hadn’t even thought of it ‘till the last minute when he found last-years costume make-up set. He gave the girl a distorted pirate smile, before winking and laughing. “I know, attractive right?” He smiled again, this time a much more natural smile. Lachlan was in such a giddy mood. He couldn’t help grinning and laughing more often that might be normal. It was a party though right? You were supposed to be enjoying yourself. If there was someone not having a good time, that would probably be a bad thing.
The young man glanced to either side of himself. “Well, it looks like at the moment I’m sailing solo.” He returned his gaze back to Virginia. “I’d ask you to be my first mate, but Peter Pan isn’t really a friend to pirates now is he?” Lachlan cocked his head to the side in a thoughtful pose. Now, as far as Lachlan was concerned, he was just being nice. It never really occurred to him that all the grinning and teasing might be misconstrued as something more. Something akin to flirting. He barely noticed things like that anymore. He was constantly being told by his friends about how girls were checking him out or flirting with him. He just didn’t see it.
The current song came to an end, and a new one started up. One that made Lachlan grin. Good old Michael Jackson classic, The way you make me feel. Lachlan had always loved that song actually. He’d always liked Michael Jackson in general. “I will ask you to dance though. Come on.” He moved towards the dance-floor. Tugging at her elbow as he went. Bringing her with him. She had no choice. She was going to dance with him, and she was going to enjoy it. That was a batter she had no choice in. Not that there was a reason not to enjoy it. Lachlan was a superb dancer. Once he had found them a clear dance space, the man took her hand. Spinning her out, then back into himself. “I’m Lachlan, by the way.” He murmured, giving her a wink before spinning her out once more.
