Creative. Determined. Classic.
Name:
Holly-Ann Lucy Harrington
Nickname(s):
Holly, Hol, Holla! (from high school; she won't respond to it), Pollyanna (used rarely in middle school; she doesn't mind this one because she likes the book). Most people who know her call her Holly, though she introduces herself to new acquaintances as Holly-Ann; and anytime her first and last name are paired, it has to be Holly-Ann, because she doesn't like the sound of Holly Harrington. Her middle name is only ever included by her parents, and that only when she is in deep trouble.
Major:
Music (piano concentration)
Age:
20
Grade:
Junior
Birthdate:
March 27th, 1988
Orientation:
Straight
Location:
(before WUofA) Denver, CO
`Appearance ,,
Holly-Ann's hair is a rich brown shade which she is proud to say is completely natural, thank you. It has a slight wave to it naturally, which she can either tease into larger curls or straighten into nonexistence when she chooses. Normally, though, she leaves the waves in, as it takes time to effect either change, and she has more important things to do than spending hours on her hair alone. Holly's hair falls a few inches past her shoulders, and is layered, with long bangs which she sweeps to one side or the other.
Holly's eyes are almost as dark a brown as her hair, and are nicely shaped, neither too large nor too small. Her lashes are long, making mascara unnecessary for all but the most formal occasions; normally all they need is a moment of curling. Her nose is long and straight, a legacy from her mother, and her mother before her. Holly's lips are neither thin nor full, but just right...just right for kissing, as she has been told. Her face is oval in shape, her chin slightly pointed. Her skin is fair, not prone to freckles or breakouts except in times of great stress.
Holly-Ann is fairly average in build, neither obese nor skeletal, though tending more toward slender than otherwise. However, she is nowhere near thin enough for anyone who sees her to fear any sort of eating disorder. She is around average height, perhaps slightly below, about 5'5" tall. Her torso is somewhat short, and her arms and legs are long. Her fingers are also long, and slender, enhancing her piano playing abilities. Their tips are fairly callused, due to her long hours of practice.
As far as fashion is concerned, Holly is not the type to follow the current trends. She doesn't feel the need to change out her entire wardrobe every time a new fashion craze hits. Instead, her outfits are the kind that are timeless, classic; never "trendy," but always in fashion. She knows the styles which suit her, and she sticks to those, though she does adapt in bits of the new styles if they fit in with her style as a whole. A person looking at her might not be able to tell what year it was just from her wardrobe, as they could from some people's; but her style would fit in seamlessly in just about any year. The same is true for make-up; she doesn't follow the trends, but still almost always manages to look well put together.

Best Feature:
"I actually really like my nose. Not that I can take any credit for it; it looks just like my mom's, and my grandma's, and probably her mother before her. But it's so straight and smooth; it's just really cute!"
Worst Feature:
"My fingernails, definitely. They're always breaking on the piano keys; I have to keep them trimmed really short to prevent that, and it's not pretty at all."
`Personality ,,
CREATIVE. Holly-Ann's attendance at WUofA can come as no surprise to anyone who knows her. She is a born artist, more specifically a born musician. Music is in her blood - her mother is a middle school music teacher, and her father played guitar in a band while he was in college. So music has always been part of Holly's routine, and is her absolute passion in life. She has had years of voice training, and lessons in several different instruments from flute to bass guitar at various points throughout her life, but her main focus has always been the piano. It is more than a pastime for her; it can also be a stress reliever, a way of expressing all the emotions which she cannot release any other way, such as her feelings about her current relationship with Jackson. Holly also composes music on the piano, though this is a secret she reveals to very few.
DETERMINED. Holly-Ann is a very determined person. When she has set a goal for herself, she will stop at nothing to accomplish it. Well, she wouldn't do anything actually illegal for it; though that has never been necessary yet in reaching any of her past goals. But she doesn't mind stepping on a few toes to get there, if it is important enough to her. She also tends to be very single-minded once she sets a goal: when she knows what she wants, almost nothing can dissuade her. Because of this, she tends to be rather stubborn once she has her heart set on something. Take for instance her relationship with Jackson. Yes, she is very well aware that he is still hung up on his ex, and that she is only a rebound; anyone who talks to him can see that. But for right now, he is hers, and she isn't going to simply throw in the towel just because he's not over Paige. She'll stay with him for now, and give him some time, in case he should change his mind and decide that he really is interested in her as herself. Every time she is reminded of Paige, it just makes her more determined to stay in this relationship as long as possible. Even though that fascinating Callum Brody certainly seems interested...
CLASSIC. Timeless. Or, in a less appealing sense of the word, old-fashioned. Either way, this is the perfect word to describe many aspects of Holly-Ann's life. The great passion of her life, music: she has always preferred the great classical composers to any of the contemporary artists. She'd rather sit on her couch and watch an old black and white movie than go to the theater to see the latest blockbuster. She prefers Jane Eyre to Harry Potter, though she has read and loves them both. Her fashion sense, as mentioned above, is classic rather than trendy. Even in relationships, she is "old-fashioned" as many people might put it. She likes chivalry, prefers the type of guy who will open doors for her, carry books, etc. The gentlemanly guy who seems to be so rare nowadays. That is another reason she is still with Jackson; he treats her like a lady. This preference of hers applies especially to sexual relationships, or in her case the lack thereof. Holly believes, old-fashioned though it may seem to many, that this is something which should be kept for the one you truly love; and while she doesn't judge any of her friends or acquaintances for their choices, she personally doesn't plan on sleeping with any man except her husband.

Positive Traits:
Affectionate. Holly-Ann has a loving heart, and isn't afraid to show it. She greets friends with hugs, and loves to kiss and cuddle when she is in a relationship. She is friendly and open, making friends quickly and easily, and getting along well with nearly everyone. However, sometimes this affection can be taken a bit too far, as in her flirting with Callum Brody.
Even-tempered. Holly generally has a calm and serene disposition. She doesn't get angry, upset, or offended easily. Most of her frustrations and stresses, which in other people may come out as angry outbursts, she channels into her music instead.
Organized. Holly-Ann is a very orderly person. Her room is always in order, so that she knows where everything is. She keeps a detailed schedule of her classes, extracurricular activities, and any other demands on her time, so that she can keep everything straight. Partly due to this, she is never late for class or any other type of meeting, since she knows exactly where she needs to be and when.
Negative Traits:
Indecisive/afraid to commit. Though Holly is very persistent once she sets her mind on something, it takes her a while to make up her mind and decide exactly what it is that she wants. She is afraid of commitment, especially in relationships, for fear of making the wrong choice and then being stuck with it.
Unforgiving. Despite Holly's generally mild temper, she does have her breaking point. And partially because she loses her temper so infrequently, once she does, she doesn't forget it. Once someone says or does something which actually cuts deep enough to wound her, she can hold that grudge for years, neither forgiving nor forgetting.
Oblivious. When Holly-Ann is concentrating hard on something, such as her music, she becomes completely oblivious to everything going on around her. If someone comes up and addresses her, chances are she won't even notice them unless they speak loudly enough. She can even forget the passage of time; one Saturday afternoon she spent five solid hours playing the piano, and didn't even realize she was hungry until she finally stopped.
Greatest Ambition:
To compose the musical score for a motion picture, and to win an Academy Award for it. Or else to play at Carnegie Hall. The former is perhaps the one she truly desires most; but the latter is the only one anyone knows about, since her compositions are a secret.
Greatest Fear:
That she will have to choose between her family, or love, and the chance to achieve her dreams; and that she'll make the wrong decision when the time comes, and it will haunt her for the rest of her life, no matter what she finally decides.
`History ,,
Holly-Ann Lucy Harrington was born in Denver, Colorado, on a late March evening. Although it was technically spring, it was unseasonably cold that year, even for Colorado, and the weather forecasters had been threatening snow all week. Holly's mother, Grace Harrington [nee Montgomery], had felt the first pangs of labor that morning and insisted that her husband, Peter Harrington, take her to the hospital right away. The snow continued to hold off for the rest of the day, but as the sun was setting, a blizzard blew in, just as sudden squalls from Grace's room announced to the world that Holly had arrived. She was greeted with great joy by her parents, and with slightly more dubious enthusiasm by her four-year-old brother Matthew.
When Holly-Ann was three, her sister Samantha was born. Holly didn't really understand what was going on, but she was fascinated by the tiny bundle in her mother's arms; though she was also startled when she reached out a little hand to touch the bundle, and it moved. But ever since that day, Holly felt intensely protective of her little sister, just as her big brother was protective of them both. The siblings were extremely close growing up, despite the age differences.
Growing up, Holly and her siblings' main priorities or activities could be classified into three different groups, each group being the area of excellence for one of the three children. The first, and most important, was education. Holly's father, an attorney, always stressed the importance of getting a good education, and insisted on that always being Holly's top priority. Holly was always a fairly good student, her organization and time management skills keeping her caught up with all of her work, and her good study skills resulting in mainly A's and scattered B's. But it was her younger sister Samantha who was always the brains of the family. She'd wanted to be a doctor for as long as Holly could remember, and there were never any doubts in Holly's mind that her little sister would accomplish just that.
The second area in which the siblings spent their time was in sports and other outdoor activities. Holly participated because it was healthy and she needed the exercise, but she never really enjoyed the majority of those activities. The one exception to that was skiing. Living in Colorado, naturally snow was a regular occurrence, and Holly first learned to ski at a young age. She always had an affinity for snow; her mother claimed it was because she was born during a blizzard. But the athlete in the family was definitely her brother Matthew. Throughout high school, he excelled at just about every sport offered; and when he was a senior, Holly's eighth grade year, he was offered a football scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. Holly was sad to see him go the next fall, but she was glad that at least he wasn't going too far away.
The final area, and Holly's personal area of excellence, was music. With her mother being a middle school music teacher, naturally all three children began piano lessons early, and continued with other instruments as their talents and inclinations led them. Holly continued to hone her skills on the piano, while she also learned the basics of guitar, flute, even cello. She also joined the school choir in middle school, and began voice lessons in high school. But her first love was always the piano, and it was during her first year of high school that she decided that was what she wanted for her career. She hadn't yet decided exactly what it was that she wanted to do, but she knew that the piano was her passion and calling in life.
During her junior year, Holly began thinking about college. She started researching all the arts and music schools she could find, and in the course of her search she discovered Washington University of Arts. It had a great reputation, and everything she read about its programs and departments made her love it more. That summer, she and her family visited several schools, but the moment Holly stepped onto the campus of WUofA, she knew it was the one. During her senior year, she sent in her application, and returned to the campus to audition for the music department. The next few months passed painfully slowly, but finally, one day Holly came home from school and found in the mailbox a large envelope addressed to her, from Washington University of Arts.
Holly-Ann's freshman year flew by, as she became familiar with the campus, made lots of friends both within and outside of her major, and basically just had the time of her life. She went on the occasional date, with guys in her classes or whom she met through her various activities, but none of those relationships went beyond a couple of dates. The same was true for most of her sophomore year. She had noticed Jackson Cole before, and thought he was both attractive and sweet, but since he was in a relationship already she hadn't paid too much attention. Until he and Paige broke up at the beginning of junior year, that is. He asked Holly out not long after the breakup, and while she kind of already suspected that he was still pining for Paige, she accepted anyway, knowing he was a good guy and not wanting to miss this chance.
They are still together now, several months later, even though she now knows that he definitely still has feelings for his ex. After all, feelings can change over time, and Holly hopes that Jackson's will shift from Paige to her. But in the meantime, she has allowed herself to get a little flirtier than she probably should with Callum Brody, though she doubts Jackson has even noticed. She'll just have to wait and see how everything turns out for them...and in the meantime, she has plenty of music to keep her hands and mind occupied.

Best Memory:
"I was nine. It was my first piano recital. I was wearing my new white blouse and black skirt that I got just for the occasion, and black shoes with little bows on them. At first I was really nervous, as I watched the room fill up; it was mostly just the families of the students who were performing, so there weren't actually that many people, but it felt like it. I waited nervously as the recital began, and the other students took their turns. My hands were shaking, which of course is a bad thing when you're about to play the piano! Finally it was my turn, so I went up to the stage, bowed to the audience just like I'd practiced, and sat down at the piano. And as my fingers touched the keys, the most amazing thing happened...my nerves disappeared! I played my very best and didn't miss a note, and it was the most fun I'd ever had. Ever since then, I knew music would be in my future."
Worst Memory:
"It was my senior year of high school, sometime in the middle of April or so. I was in my first serious relationship at the time, and we had been discussing our plans for prom, which would be at the end of the month. But over the weekend, I received a letter from Washington University of Arts, telling me I was accepted pending my audition for the music department. The letter included the date and time of my scheduled audition, and it was the same weekend as the prom. So that Monday morning before school, I had to tell my boyfriend that I couldn't go to prom with him after all. I had hoped he would understand - I thought he knew how important music was to me - but I was wrong. He dumped me on the spot, and before the day had even ended, I found out he had already asked some other girl out. That was the worst choice I ever had to make, although I know I made the right choice because he wasn't worth it. Still, I hope and pray that I never have to make that kind of choice again."
`Writing Skill ,,
The latest dance had just come to an end, and Lucy applauded politely along with the rest of the crowd as the orchestra paused briefly in between dances. In the interim, Lucy began once again to seek out sight of her daughter, of whom she had lost track during the complex figures of the dance. She had watched Isabelle as much as she could this night, partly out of affection for the girl; but also because watching Isabelle, her youth, her beauty, brought back Lucy's own youth and days of glory, back in the early years of her reign...back when Ashton was still hers alone, back when Lucy could do no wrong, at least in her own eyes. Back when her deepest desire was the crown of Adesia...or further back still, when her parents still lived, and her only ambitions were to dance and sing her way through life, and to one day find a love like that of her parents.
But the crown of Adesia had slipped from her grasp, though at one time it had nearly been hers through Ambrose. Singing was a thing of the past, at least in public...indeed, Lucy couldn't remember the last time she had opened her mouth in song for any reason. Dancing...she still danced at balls, if invited to, though only the less strenuous dances were within her abilities now. Even love itself had failed her. Again, she had nearly had it once, but then Alden had died...Lucy had never even had the chance to tell him just how much he meant to her. And the only person who had come close to stirring those emotions within her since then, Richard, had certainly never been a possibility for marriage.
Indeed, Lucy had never realized how strong her feelings were for him until five years before, at Elric's coronation. Isabelle had suddenly asked her if she loved Andrew...a completely understandable question; Lucy herself had been filled with romantic dreams at that age as well, and looking for romance everywhere. So Lucy had made a somewhat nonchalant answer, not wanting to spoil her daughter's dreams by learning that her parents' marriage had been arranged. But Belle had pressed the issue, and so Lucy had told her that her father had given Lucy the best thing in her life - Isabelle - and so she loved him for it. Isabelle, of course, had believed that Lucy was talking about Andrew when she said "your father," and was satisfied...but for Lucy, who had actually been referring to Richard, it had been a revelation. She hadn't been lying. Up to that point, she had believed that her feelings toward him had been purely physical...there had certainly always been more sexual attraction between them than she had felt toward any other man, ever since their very first meeting. But for the first time, she had realized that there was something more there as well. She wasn't sure if she could call it "love" - it certainly wasn't the same as what she had once felt for Alden - but it was more than the physical desire of one person for another.
As the orchestra members returned to their instruments and began to play the next dance, a slow, gentle melody, Lucy was drawn back from her reminiscing to the present time. She heard a footstep behind her, but before she could turn, she felt a familiar presence at her side, and a familiar voice whispering in her ear, calling her by name - a name she hadn't gone by in eighteen years. The next moment, Richard stood before her, clad splendidly in the colors of Harleston. Her smile matched his as their eyes met through their masks...masks which could never conceal their identities to each other. "Lord Richard," she murmured, lightly emphasizing the obsolete title. "Living in the past tonight, are we, Your Grace?"
Her smile widened at his next suggestive words. She knew he had always thought her beautiful, just as he had always been the most attractive man she had ever known; but it was always nice to hear those words from someone she knew meant them. "No crime at all," she disagreed lightly. "Perhaps I simply wished to make sure that only a skilled hunter such as yourself would be able to find me. And after all...the longer the hunt, the greater the reward, is that not the case?" She moved half a step closer as she spoke, her eyes never leaving his. "Tell me," she murmured, "have you explored any mazes lately?" Her words and tone of voice revealed nothing but innocent curiosity, completely unremarkable to anyone who happened to overhear...but her eyes shone with a wicked gleam that promised far more.
