No more rehearsing or nursing the part We know every part by <3
Allen walked down the hall, his bags weighing heavy in his hands. His mom had insisted on helping him pack which had translated roughly into ‘I’ll do the packing, you’ll screw it up’. He loved his mother but there were many times when she got a little overprotective which was why he was happy she’d been willing to let him move onto the campus. It had been a teary goodbye filled with blubbering and the occasional bit of bawling… and that had just been his Dad. He had hated the cab ride over to the campus, he’d been stuck with one of those racist cabbies who didn’t get that the Civil War was long over so he’d spent the entire trip sitting in the back seat in silence twiddling his thumbs and hoping that they got there soon. Luckily when they had it had been insanely easy to get the papers filled out and now here he was, walking down his first dorm room hall, his bags in his hands and his key slipped into the back pocket of his jeans. He hoped his roommate was either a cool girl who he could chat with or a cute guy; in fact he was mainly looking for the second one.
He got to the door and stood there for a minute, he was nervous as well as excited. “Come on Allen, not that big a deal” he said to himself to psyche up a little. He put one of the bags down and reached into his pocket for the key. He grabbed it and put the key in the keyhole and turned it, he felt the lock click so he knew that he’d gotten the right room and slowly pushed the door open. There was the bed he’d wondered about, a nice empty bed and it looked like the other side of the room had been claimed. He walked over to the empty side of the room “Home sweet home” he said to himself as he lifted his bag onto the bed and opened it, not knowing what his mother had packed. On the top of his clothes and books was an envelope with the word ‘Allen’ written on it in his mothers handwriting, he sat on the end of the bed and opened it, reading the note inside his head.
Dear Allen
Just a note to let you know that your father and I are so very proud of you and we hope you made it safely. I didn’t want to say this to you in person because I know how excited you get when you’re happy. As a special treat for getting through Freshman year and moving out of the house your dad and I scrimped and saved and bought you that Ipod you’ve been asking endlessly about. Dad put your CD collection on it while you were at your Aunt’s over the holidays.
We hope you like it sweetie, make sure you call us lots to tell us about what’s going on
Love Mom
P.S. I’m going to be sending cookies to you once I know where you’re staying so tell me soon as possible please
Allen was jumping up and down happily on the bed as he finished the note; he had wondered why his mom had insisted on packing his bags. He looked through all the compartments of the bag, trying to find the fabled treat he’d read about. It took a good minute of riffling through his stuff before he saw it sitting there; they’d even gotten the colour right. It was blue just like he’d asked and when he turned it on he could see that they had indeed manages to get every last CD he’d owned on there. He promised himself that once he’d finished unpacking that he would call his mom to let him know that he’d made it safely. She was a worrier so he knew if he didn’t call she’d think he’d been abducted by terrorists or something like that.
