_______________________________________________ Virginia's delicate hand caressed the cold silver railing as she looked out into the evening sky. The railing didn't really serve a purpose since the entire room was encased in a circle of glass. It was probably just there so that a drunk person wouldn't be tempted to jump out of the window. It would be a pretty cool way to go though, Virginia thought as her left hand tucked a stray curl behind her ear. Falling off the space needle, that would be a great story t tell when you got to the pearly gates. "Nah, not suicide. Just drunk at some wedding reception. You know, someone should have made a railing there." Virginia couldn't help but smile at herself. Oh the things that she thought up. It was pretty up here though. That was the one good decision her mother had made in awhile. The bad decision streak had started with the condemnation of Virginia's father, sped up at moving to Seattle to be close to her girl, took a sharp right at going out with mr. manly pants, and crashed into a tree when saying 'I do.' to the same exact man.
Virginia couldn't see any of the reasons that her mother had married him. Actually, she could tell exactly why her mother had married him. They were just different reasons than they led on to be. Apparently, he was supposed to be funny, charming and 'prince charming'. In reality, Charles was chauvinistic, pompous, rich, and loved doing anything that involved testosterone. It was one thing that Virginia could applaud her mother about, she had found the most stereotypical male and got hitched. And now here she was, standing at the wedding reception, wondering what her mother had gotten their family into. Everywhere she turned she saw mini-Charles, strutting around in their best suites. The ladies were an even worse sight. Beauty queens that hung on their man's arms all evening, obeying their every will. Now Virginia didn't mind fancy parties, but there could be at least a little fun invovled, right? She had dreamed too big, apparently. The band that they had hired was playing that slow jazz that isn't fast enough to swing dance too and not slow enough to feel comfortable getting too close to anyone. Just awkward, a perfect match for the population in the room.
Desperate to keep from anyone noticing her, Virginia had taken a good place near the window, entertaining herself by looking at the Seattle night scape. She still had her maid of honor dress on, which she had insisted on picking out herself. A maroon strapless dress that wasn't long enough to make her look like a nun. It was what four of the bridesmaid dresses looked like. Virginia wasn't going to wear any pastel to this wedding, she had promised herself. Good thing that Charles had decided to pay for the entire wedding, which had made picking out the dresses extremely fun. So here Virginia stood, at least she felt pretty. She turned away from the window to look back at the reception for a moment. It all looked so...scripted. She had enough scripts in theatre, she didn't need it in her real life too. Oh well, at least her mom looked happy.
Suddenly, she saw two figures coming toward her. Cursing herself for turning around, she smiled and immediately grabbed a glass of champagne from a waiter walking by. "Thank you so much for all of this, Charles." She lied through her teeth, sounding like the picture perfect daughter. He just smiled and nodded, not even feeling the need to reply to the comment. Maybe to him it was just the way he expected to be greeted. "This is my nephew, Robert. He goes to SBU as well." He said formally, forcing the regular smile. As soon as he introduced the two of them, he was off to another group of guests to mingle uselessly. "Nice to meet you." Virginia smiled, taking a long sip of the cold champagne. She hoped that he hadn't noticed her grip tightening on the railing. "Nice to meet you too. Uncle Charles said that you were a theatre major. I am a business major myself." He continued, trying to start a conversation that Virginia had had way too many times with people. She nodded and smiled, using all her talent to mask her boredom. Please someone save me, she thought to herself.

The Space Needle always made Prescott feel... free, somehow. or maybe it just made him think of home. He missed home. He missed New York. He missed Lily most of all. How would Lily be doing? She had skipped ahead a whole grade... she was a senior amongst unfamiliar, older kids, and he knew that would be hard for shy, insecure Lily. She would probably be thinking of him, too--like she always did, worrying that college was making a stranger out of him--and he made a mental note to himself to email her when he got back to the dorm. The worst part of college was definitely being away from New York and Lily. By far.
But here, on the Space Needle, it made him think of nights on the Empire State Building, goofing off with his high school friends or eating dinner with Lily, or just walking around when there was nothing else to do. He could see all of Seattle from here, or so he liked to think, and he liked to imagine Lily standing on the Empire State Building at the same moment.
Of course, that was ridiculous. She had homework, and their mother never let her out of the house on school nights; especially when she had work. Often, their mother came home late and did not like her children to be out when she was out. Even though Lily was a senior. Even though she was the most responsible senior Prescott had ever known.
Today was a weird day to come to the Space Needle, though. Prescott had only come to get some time to think, but he had arrived on this floor and, lo and behold, a party. Was that today? Was that party supposed to be today? Oh, crap, no. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.
"Prescott? Is that you? Oh, good! You didn't forget! Darling, I'm so glad you could make it!" Prescott's overenthusiastic little bundle of joy of an aunt, Annabelle, walked up to him, glass of champagne in hand, husband on arm. His uncle Daniel shook hands with him, giving him the 'oh boy' expression that he knew all too well. Daniel was not used to the classy atmosphere. He came from a lower middle class family, and hated dressing up. "Listen, there's someone I'd like you to meet," she took Prescott's arm.
Everywhere there were men in suits with ladies in elegant, flowing dresses trailing around like lost puppies by their sides. It made Prescott laugh, even though he was a formal events fan, to look at it. It was just so peculiar. He liked parties, sure, but please, could they be a little less stiff, even if it was formal? He held a glass of champagne in his hand and pretended he was supposed to be here, even though he was underdressed for the occasion. No, he was not wearing a tuxedo and shiny black shoes. On the contrary, he was just wearing a shirt with a tie (that was messily tied around his neck) and just plain old shoes. It didn't matter. He was here, what could he do now?
"Of course, Aunt Anna, but first, there's someone I have to say hi to," he spotted a familiar-looking girl from theatre standing off to the side, looking miserable. He almost laughed, but realized she was in the exact same situation as he was.
"Fix your tie, Prescott," his aunt reached for the sloppy tie, but Prescott pulled away.
"I'll be right back!" He walked up to the girl and two males who were chatting and got a closer look at her. Virginia... Virginia something. He couldn't remember her last name at the moment, but they had spoken before in theatre. Prescott had a soft spot for the kids in theatre. He was always nicer to them than everyone else, and that was the only thing that compelled him to go and rescue Virginia at this moment.
"Hello, theatre buddy," he interrupted as he walked up to Virginia. He stood next to her but slightly away from the two others. "I'd like to... discuss something with you. Those auditions, remember? Uh... I needed help rehearsing that last bit... somewhere quiet?" Hopefully he would understand what he meant.

Virginia stood there, trying to act interested, but it just wasn't working. Why couldn't this guy just leave her alone? He didn't just look like all these other stiffs, he acted like them too. As he started talking about what kind of business he wanted to create and of course there was his 'plan' in which the order he would get a great paying job at a corporation, marry a trophy wife, have 2.5 kids and become an alcoholic just like his father. Virginia's right heel tapped against the floor as her fingers fiddled with her champagne glass. Whenever she was bored, she always got the jitters. She just couldn't stand still. "That's really nice." She said, another forced smile toward the guy. He muttered a thanks and continued on his speech about himself. Virginia didn't know how anyone could find so much to say about themselves but this guy was definitely breaking the record. She looked over to Charles and her mother, talking to some random stiffs. All she wanted to do was be with her dad right now. Her mind wandered to what they would be doing tonight if she was there. Probably sitting on the couch with her dad and his boyfriend, eating pizza and making jokes at a horrible movie. That was her idea of a good night. Not this crap where you meet everyone but never really get to know anyone.
As her mind and eyes wandered, not even trying to concentrate on the guy now, she noticed a familiar face. It was that guy from one of her theatre classes. They had talked for a short while, just until class had started. Virginia didn't know him that well but hey, he was cute. Hopefully he wasn't like all these other people. Of course, he was dressed a little casual for the occasion. Maybe that was a good sign. She hoped that she was in this new family somehow, at least she would have another person to talk theatre with. Her focus switched back to the most boring man on earth. "Yeah, I'm a theatre major and I want to act after I get out of school." She interrupted him. He was taken aback a little bit, probably not used to women interrupting him. "Yeah, I don't really have a life plan I'm just going to wing it and see where it gets me" She added, hoping to drop the hint that she thought he was a total asshole. He was speechless. He couldn't think that anyone would go into life without a plan. It was the very opposite for Virginia, she had always thought it exciting.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw...Prescott, that was his name, walking toward them. Oh please, please. Come on, get over here! She thought to herself, becoming more excited as he shortened the distance between them. She was going to use him as an escape from this mess, she didn't care what he thought about it. "Hey Prescott!" She called to him, even before he was all the way next to her. She gave him a desperate look as he said hello. Good thing for theatre buddies. She nodded as he asked her if she could help him with his 'audition'. "Oh yea, of course!" She said, rushed. "Sorry..umm.." She had already forgotten this kid's name. "Hope your plan turns out." She said with a smile before grabbing Prescott's hand and pulling him away. She led him through the crowds before they could get to a little clearing on the other side of the room. She let out a sigh and immediately she stopped fidgeting and was once again relaxed. "Thank you so much. I thought I was going to have to hear him talking all night." She let a little, genuine smile out of her mouth. "So, what brings you to this lovely occasion?" Her voice was both full of curiosity and sarcasm.

It gave him a feeling of... security to be with someone he knew, especially from his theatre class. He didn't really know what the soft spot for theatre was. It just... was there. They felt like his family to him. Or at least, closer than any other foolish college student out there who pretended to be interested in theatre.
And it was nice to talk to Virginia. She was... sensible, for the most part, at least from what he had seen of her. She didn't act like a theatre wannabe in class (thank God) and she wasn't like a lot of bubbly, energetic obnoxious blond girls he had been out with. He remembered he had dated a girl who claimed she was in love with theatre. It turned out she had only a little experience: she played a raindrop in her second grade school play and had a one-line solo. Quite obviously, things hadn't worked out.
It was even better than Virginia was pretty. Prescott loved pretty girls. Not that he was thinking about liking Virginia (not yet, anyway), but it was just an observation. Her hair was brown and wavy and she had nice eyes. He looked at her dress, and thought about complimenting it (not that she would probably take it well. She clearly hated this atmosphere). "Nice dress," he smirked. But he meant it. It was a lovely red color. He had noticed her looking disapprovingly at all the women and men draped over each other, and concluded that this was not her scene.
"Lily would hate this, too." he commented, out of the blue. She would. She hated all the fancy dinner parties and events they had to go to as children. She despised the spotlight. The only part she liked? Getting to dress up. And Lily would have loved the dress that Virginia was wearing. He needed to remember to call her when he got out of this insane party.
"Who exactly is him?" Prescott inquired. She hadn't looked too pleased with their conversation and had looked relieved when he had intercepted. Of course, he had been quite relieved, too, so he wasn't exactly one to talk. And when she mentioned what brought him here, he sighed and frowned.
"Well, last weekend, my aunt Anna," he gestured to her--what was she doing? Was she drunk? No, wait, she was just laughing at someone's joke. Very, very loudly--"called me and asked me to attend some party at the Space Needle. She had people she wanted to introduce me to, you know, for my career and all. I want to go into acting after I'm done with college, I'm sure you know all about that." He had heard Virginia mention a future in acting as well.
"So, what else could I say? I accepted the invitation, and she sounded overjoyed." Prescott remembered exactly what she had said: Oh, Pres, I'm so glad you can come! I have so many people to introduce you to. This will be a big event for your career. You know, if Mr. Rivera likes you, you could... Prescott had tuned out while she had gone on and on and on, and then finally made the excuse of having to go to class and hung up. "I forgot that the party was today and showed up here, hoping to have some time just to think, and... well, when I saw her, it all clicked. And here I am."
"What about you? Why are you here today?" He grinned, hoping for a long story. He loved stories. Particularly good ones, not flimsy fairy tales about wolves that ate grandmas and pumpkins that turned into carriages. Apart from when he was acting, Prescott was not a big believer in fantasy. "Are you thrilled to be here, like everyone else seems to be?"

Virginia took another sip of her champagne glass. Even though she was under age, the waiters had been given permission to serve everyone alcohol because it was a special occasion. Virginia, however, saw nothing special about it. It was just one of those stupid things that her mom did to try and create the perfect life for herself. She knew that it would end up terribly and her mother would be broken until she found the next means to become rich and well-known. But Virginia couldn't despise her too much, she had married Virginia's father which resulted in Virginia's life. Plus, her father was probably one of her best friends. So at least her mother had done one things right. As Prescott and her got away from the other guy, her head turned back to take one last look. He was just standing there, dumb-founded. She gave out a little chuckle, she wasn't usually mean like that but that guy had really needed a wake up call.
"Nice dress." She heard Prescott say as her stomach turned a little, in a good way. Even though Virginia had received her fair share of compliments growing up, each one she received still touched her like that. It was one thing that theatre hadn't taken away, being humble. "Thanks." She said with a little chuckle. She struggled with whether it was supposed to be a joke or not. "It's about the only thing I like about this whole thing." She added, still smiling. Virginia was rarely mad and although she didn't really like being here, she had to find the happiness and humor in the whole thing. It was what kept her afloat in life. He had mentioned something about Lily and Virginia didn't have time to ask who it was. Part of her hoped that it wasn't some kind of girlfriend, but she tried to stop the thought before it got too deep in her mind. What does it matter if he has a girlfriend? It's not like you like him or anything....Virginia always had to keep telling herself that. Why did she fall for guys so easily?!
She laughed when Prescott asked about the stiff that she had been talking too. "That is....I don't know. I forgot his name. But he is a business major at SBU and apparently we are cousins or something now. He also has a plan for his entire life which he told me in detail." She said, rolling her eyes. She just couldn't stand people like that. She couldn't even imagine sticking to a plan her entire life, that wasn't what life was for. She took another sip, her champagne starting to loose its cold refreshing part now. During a pause in their conversation, she noticed the song that the band was playing at the moment. Miles Davis. Wonderful song. She had a weird craving to go dance to it, even though it was a slow song. But she couldn't show her mom that she was actually having a good time at this, and also she didn't want to mingle with this people anymore than she had too. She let the song just slip to the back of her mind, making beautiful background music. She listened intently as Prescott explained what had brought him here. It was kind of interesting hearing that people were using her mother's wedding reception as a career fair but she guessed that was how it worked in these people's lives. Oh yes, the career. Virginia wasn't sure if Prescott was talking about meeting theatre people or if his aunt was trying to convince him to get 'a real job' but Virginia knew the feeling. All day her mother had been introducing her to people in different fields, hoping that it would suddenly make Virginia see that she didn't want to do theatre after all. It just made her resent her mother even more.
"It's actually my mom's wedding reception. She is marrying that guy over there." Virginia pointed to the middle of the room where her mother and Charles were now dancing. She hoped to God that they weren't going to make Virginia's favorite Miles Davis song their 'song'. She just stared a minute, lost in the thought of her mother actually liking that guy. There was no way. She knew her mother better than her mother knew herself. That was the problem. She snapped out of it when Prescott asked her another question. "Oh yeah, I love this thing like every one here pretends to love their life." Virginia said with a tone of sarcasm and a smile. She really did feel sorry for these people, stuck in a horrible life because their families were well-connected. She saw what it did to people, what it had done to her father. At least he had the courage to get out. She emptied her glass and gave it back to a waiter passing by.
"Hey, do you wanna go to the observation deck? I really need some air." She said, looking up into Prescott's eyes. It was almost another plea. She could stay here for much longer or she would start to get actually upset.

Even though it was probably mean and tantalizing, Prescott kept glancing over Virginia's shoulder at the guy and smiling; the guy was now staring, mouth wide open, at the two of them. It gave him a feeling of triumph; he wanted to go over there and close his mouth for him but he restrained himself. The boy was tilting his head now, as if trying to make sense of the situation. Clearly he had never faced a situation like this before. Clearly he found it rude to be cut off suddenly when a boy came over and stole the person you were talking to. Okay, who wouldn't find that rude, but still.
"The color suits you," he added once he saw that he wouldn't... offend her, or anything. "When Lily comes over, she should meet you. She'd like you. Poor kid thinks I'm turning into a delinquent over here, and has for a long time at that, she's sick with worry." He blinked once with realization that Virginia, who barely knew him outside of theatre, would not know who Lily was. "Lily's not, you know..." he struggled with what to say, "my girlfriend or anything. I don't even think I like anyone right now." Cecilia Reese did not count. Cecilia Reese did not count. Cecilia Reese did not count. He didn't like Cecilia (of course not); she didn't even like him (why would she?). He didn't even know what he felt for her. "Lily's my little sister." A little sister whom he missed a lot, he might have added. She was trying to come in to SBU on some degree, he forgot what it was. Art? No, it was something like Medicine. Yeah, he was pretty sure it was Medicine or English. Lily had always been a brainy sort of kid. Smarter than he was, for the most part. Always thinking things through, sensible, reasonable. Sometimes he thought that she was more of the older sibling than he was, she was so mature.
"My aunt wants me to go into Law," he added. "I think it's such a stiff career... I couldn't do it." It was true. And Prescott would never be able to plan out his life. He didn't even know what he would be doing in two weeks, let alone two years. He just... let life go where it took him. Mr. Rivera, it turned out, was the CEO of a major law firm. His aunt insisted that she knew people who could influence his theatre career, too, but law was 'top priority.' You could go places, Pres, you could! She had gushed excitedly. Imagine... my little nephew in a LAW firm! The idea didn't exactly appeal to Prescott the way it did to his aunt, though.
"Your mother's, huh? Well, that must mean my aunt knows your mother, or the groom." That didn't surprise him. His aunt knew everyone. It was a little disturbing how she pulled people out of thin air and had connections with... well, everyone.
Now that she mentioned it, Prescott kind of wanted to get out of here, too. He hated this. He needed to escape from his aunt, who he could see coming through a crowd, calling his name, dragging Daniel and probably a big-shot lawyer behind her. "Let's go."
He made his way, making sure she was behind him, to the elevator, avoiding Anna by ducking or moving quickly behind some people. He clicked the button for the observation deck and the elevator doors closed on the two of them, enveloping them in silence. Prescott wondered if Virginia had a boyfriend. He hadn't heard anything about it--but then some people liked to keep relationships private, now, didn't they? Prescott wasn't one of those people. But maybe Virginia was. As a theatre student, you kind of had to be confident enough to be on stage, didn't you? So why would she want to? He should have asked her. No, that would have implied something. But why did he care, anyway? He didn't.
Did he?

Virginia tried not to blush when Prescott commented on the color of her dress. It was just all too...she didn't even know, but she liked it. She continued smiling when he added that she should meet Lily but her head was torn. If it was his girlfriend, of course she would meet him but she didn't really know if she wanted to. Just the idea of Prescott having a girlfriend brought her hopes down. The battle in her head started up again. I don't even like him, it doesn't even matter. I don't even know him that well. It was words that Virginia had had to think to herself many times before and they usually never worked. She listened intently as he went on and tried not to show an expression of relief when he noted that Lily was his sister, not his girlfriend. Thank God. No wait...it didn't matter. Virginia's mind was turning a mile a minute. "Yeah, I would love to meet her." She added.
Virginia nodded as Prescott talked about his aunt and the whole career deal. She knew exactly where he was coming from and what that pressure felt like. "Yep, my mother is set on me being a fashion designer or something like that." Virginia explained, rolling her eyes. It was always the same with theatre people and everyone else. Theatre was such a taboo thing that you are never going to make money in and you should just stop trying at it right now. Good thing that there were people like Prescott and Virginia to keep shooting for it, otherwise all those lawyers wouldn't have anything to take their mistress to on a Saturday night. After asking him if he wanted to go outside, Virginia was glad that he had agreed to it. It meant that either he didn't mind being alone with her or he actually did want to be alone with her. Or maybe she was just reading too much into it like she did with everything. As they started on their way to the elevator, she noticed a lady rushing toward them, followed by two guys. She guessed that it was Prescott's aunt that had invited him here. In fact, she vaguely remembered being introduced to her earlier in the evening. Virginia gave out a laugh as she noticed Prescott gain speed, obviously trying to get away from them. She wasn't laughing at Prescott, she just knew the exact same situation and had been doing that all night. It was good to know that someone else was in the same position as you. They finally reached the elevator and to their luck, it opened as soon as Prescott had pressed the up button. They rushed in and Virginia made sure to hit the close doors button before his aunt could make anymore ground. There was just silence for a moment before Virginia started laughing. "Wow, she is ruthless." A big smile on her face. She could feel her toes starting to get tingly. No, she had only had one glass of champagne! Oh wait...she started to remember the glass and a half that she had had at dinner, with all the toasts and stuff. She hoped to god that she wasn't going to get too drunk in the next couple minutes. She knew she would be alright but she did tend to get pretty silly. She just hoped that Prescott would be okay with that. Honestly, she didn't know why she cared so much. But she did.
They reached the observation deck just as Virginia noticed a sign on the elevator. Observation Deck Closed from 10pm-6am. There was no way that it was before ten right now. To Virginia's surprise the elevator still opened up and let them out onto the empty deck. Apparently they had forgotten to do whatever they do to elevators to make them skip this deck or something. Oh well, it added excitement to it all. "I don't think we are supposed to be up here." Virginia said with a huge smile. She loved breaking the rules. She stepped out from the elevator and immediately went over to the edge. There was a huge barbed wire fence to keep anyone from falling over but it was still all out in the open. Surprisingly, there was only a slight wind, just enough to lift Virginia's hair off her neck a little bit. She stepped up onto the railing and looked out. She had never been up the space needle before and this view was even better from the one inside the banquet hall below. She looked at the Seattle downtown, shimmering with lights under a midnight sky. This was just amazing. She turned her head back to Prescott and smiled.

"No, I'm not just saying that, you really should meet her," he pressed. Lily would like Virginia. They were almost the same age, they'd probably get along extremely well. From what Prescott could tell, Virginia was a really down-to-earth girl and Lily would relish in that. Maybe they could carry on some intelligent conversation about whatever Lily was doing--if Virginia liked that kind of thing. "She's the only member of my family who truly supports what I'm doing. You know?" Of course she would know. He was sure that Virginia had been through it all the time.
Once they had safely dodged his aunt and gotten into the elevator, Prescott closed the doors quickly and looked at Virginia. "Oh, you've seen nothing. There was this auction once, and it was..." he rolled his eyes. His father was holding a charity event, and all night (especially during the bachelor bidding, which they were doing just for fun) his aunt had been after him, begging him to sit with her and her 'high-society friends' (he knew them all already, thanks) and encouraging him to go up on stage. It really did not help that he already had a date that night, who was terribly turned off by Anna.
The deck was supposed to be closed this late at night--Prescott was certain about that--but he got out as Virginia did. She looked below them, to Seattle, with its glittering lights and all its splendor. She was awestruck, clearly, and Prescott could not help but smile a little bit at her wide grin.
One thing he was worried about, though, was that Virginia was getting caught up in him. It was arrogant of him to think that--okay, that really was not much news to him--but she was grinning at him with this look in her eyes. Virginia was cute, and sweet, and into theatre, and all of the qualities he looked for in a girl. But... Prescott was afraid. He could not commit to her. He would not be there for her through everything, if that's what she thought, and he did not want her to get involved with him. I mean, sure, he would go out with her for a bit, encourage it for awhile, but there was no telling what happened after that.
